Often referred to as the father of science fiction, Victorian author Jules Verne is renowned for his fantastical adventures imagining extraordinary voyages to strange new horizons. Prolific and prophetic, he wrote over 50 novels and numerous short stories, in which he foretold the skyscraper, the submarine, space missions and even the Internet. Featured here are contemporary adaptations of four of his most famous tales, as well as a special episode of The Forum examining the long-lasting appeal of his work.

During the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition in New York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard.

Per questo vi si ritrovano alcuni personaggi dei due capitoli precedenti e allusioni alle vicende in essi narrate, primo fra tutti il Capitano Nemo.Il libro racconta le avventure di un gruppo di americani naufragati su un'isola del Sud Pacifico non segnata sulle mappe. L'"isola misteriosa" sulla quale la storia è ambientata (un'isola fittizia ipoteticamente situata nell'Oceano pacifico) può anche essere un riferimento alla vera isola di Lincoln.

The story involves a professor who leads his nephew and hired guide down a volcano in Iceland to the "center of the Earth". They encounter many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy.
