Kirk Jensen always chased his dreams. He even left home and chased them across the country. He expected that hard work, training, and determination would make his dreams a reality. Afterall, people always say that if you work hard, you can achieve your goals. He did not expect to be a short order cook working long shifts for minimum wage. He certainly didn't expect to take the garbage out one night and find himself confronted by a thousand pounds of fury armed with fangs and claws. He did not expect to survive.

Suliel is returning to the walled city. But while she has the ability to assess others' primary loyalties, she remains deeply uncertain as to whom she can trust. Indeed, she even doubts her own mother's intentions. Fortunately, as she surveys her surroundings and navigates court intrigue, she's guided by a voice in her head: that of Kelsey, a sentient dungeon with an ax to grind. Unable to stifle her snarky attitude, Kelsey's avatar offends the black-eyed god Riadi when she expresses her desire to free the mortal races—a mission she expects Suliel to play a significant role in.

Traveling to distant, exotic lands and meeting interesting, exciting people is all part of Kelsey's gig as a dungeon. And if she has to kill someone, well . . . they probably had it coming. Ever at her—or at least her avatar's—side is the dependable Anton, and now he's leading her on a quest across the ocean to rescue his people from slavery. That doesn't mean Kelsey can neglect the home front though. Her putative liege, Suliel, has earned a telepathic link to her, allowing the dungeon to coordinate the development of the barony.

Being a small dungeon on the outskirts of town in the backwaters of an unimportant kingdom isn't easy, but Kelsey's done her best to level up and become the best dungeon she can be: Digging a hole of ever-increasing depth and complexity. Creating an undead atmosphere that would make a necromancer proud. Spawning monsters and treasure. Killing adventurers. But lately, things have gotten a bit stale.
