The 1949 film The Third Man won an Academy Award and was an international success, called "magic" by Roger Ebert and "one of the finest films ever made" by The New York Times.

Der Broadway-Autor Harvey Parker und das Model Cassandra May sind seit wenigen Tagen ein Paar. Parkers vorherige Freundin Cathrin, mit der er zwei Monate zusammen war, ist vor wenigen Wochen bei einem Autounfall ums Leben gekommen. Parker arbeitet eifrig an einem Off-Broadway-Stück. Als er eines Abends sein Manuskript öffnet, findet er eine Textpassage, die er nicht geschrieben hat. Zumindest denkt er das, schreibt diesen Umstand aber einer durchzechten Nacht zu. Doch auch am nächsten Tag ist das Stück fortgeschrieben, ohne dass er daran einen Anteil gehabt hätte.

Inspector Kenneth Stafford wird zu einem Tatort gerufen, der in ihm seltsame Erinnerungen weckt. An exakt derselben Stelle, in derselben Straße, wurde bereits vor 20 Jahren eine Tote gefunden. Sein Vater, Chief-Inspector Anthony Stafford, hat den Fall damals bearbeitet, konnte ihn aber nicht aufklären. Dennoch lässt Kenneth der Gedanke nicht los, dass der Fall von damals etwas mit dem Fall von heute zu tun haben muss. Akribisch versucht er die Ermittlungen seines Vaters von damals aufzurollen und den Faden an der entscheidenden Stelle wiederaufzunehmen.
