يروي ناظم الزهاوي في مذكراته «الفتى القادم من بغداد» مسيرة حياته منذ سنواته الأولى في العراق حتى مسيرته السياسية البريطانية. ينقسم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أبواب كبرى، يعكس كل منها مرحلة مهمة من حياته: طفولته في بغداد، وانتقاله للعيش في المملكة المتحدة، وصعوده إلى الشهرة السياسية وخروجه النهائي من عالم السياسة. يروي الزهاوي كيف شهدت عائلته الاستبداد المتزايد في العراق، وقمع المعارضة، وتحول البلاد إلى دولة يسكنها الخوف. لذلك قررت عائلته الفرار إلى المملكة المتحدة حين كان الزهاوي في الحادية عشرة من عمره، خوفاً من الاضطهاد. يصف المؤلف تحديات التآلف مع اللغة والثقافة والنظام التعليمي البريطاني. وفي سنوات مراهقته، ترسخت اهتماماته بدنيا الأعمال. وقد وفَّر له نجاحه في مجال الأعمال الثقة والمنصة المناسبة لدخول عالم السياسة. وكانت البداية انتخابه نائباً عن حزب المحافظين، ثم تسلمه بضع حقائب وزارية في ضمنها وزارة التعليم ووزارة الخزانة.

يتناول هذا الكتاب مذكرات الرحالة الإسباني «دومينجو باديا إي ليبليش» الذي انتحل شخصية «علي باي العباسي» مُدَّعِياً أنه من أحفاد العباسيين الهاربين إلى أوروبا بعد سقوط دولتهم. بدأ رحلاتـه من المغرب حتى الشرق العربي في مرحلة من أخطر مراحل المنطقة سياسياً مع نهايات القرن الثامن عشر وبدايات القرن التاسع عشر؛ الفترة التي شهدت المدّ البريطاني الفرنسي على المنطقة للسيطرة على طريق التجارة مع الهند وشرق آسيا. هذه المذكرات والرحلات لم يلتفت إليها سوى القليل من العرب رغم ترجمتها ونشرها في عدد من اللغات الحية مثل الفرنسية والإنجليزية والألمانية. يشمل هذا الكتاب وصف رحلة علي باي إلى المدن والمجتمعات التي مر بها من شمال أفريقيا إلى الإسكندرية والقاهرة، ثم رحلته إلى الحجاز وأدائه مناسك الحج، مع وصف دقيق لمكة والكعبة المشرفة، والشخصيات التي التقاها في الحجاز، ثم عودته إلى القاهرة والرحيل منها باتجاه الشام، ماراً بشمال سيناء ومدن وقرى فلسطين حتى وصوله إلى أورشليم (القدس)، ليواصل رحلته منها إلى دمشق، مع وصف دقيق لنشاط سكان تلك البلاد في مجال التجارة، والعناصر المختلفة المكونة لمجتمعاتها السكانية.

إنه عملاق الأدب الفرنسي في القرن العشرين؛ وما زلنا الآن نعيش زمن بروست، كما قالت جوليا كريستيفا. ويرى كثير من النقّاد العالميين أن "السباعية هي أفضل إنجاز أدبي في عصرنا" (فالتر بنيامين)، لأنها أصبحت من أعمدة الثورة الروائية الآن. وفيها أراد بروست أن يفهمنا معنى الحياة والموت والذاكرة والزمن: تبدأ الجملة الأولى فيها بكلمة "زمن" وتنتهي بها. وبناها على غرار الكاتدرائيات القروسطية. لقد كتبها بروست بحيث تكون مفتوحة على الفلسفة والألسنية والسيميائية والتحليل النفسي، وأتت جملها شبيهة بجمل الكاتب اللاتيني شيشرون الفضفاضة sententia. وتُعَدّ السباعية أطول رواية في القرن العشرين (حوالي 4000 صفحة). وأنجزها بروست خلال 16 سنة، وكأن ساعة موته أرجئت حتى ينهيها، وتم له ذلك. يقول شيخ البروستيين في العالم، جان إيف تادييه: الإنكليز عندهم "شكسبير"، والألمان "غوته"، والروس "دستويفسكي"، والإيطاليون "دانتي"، والإسبان "ثيربانتيس". أما الفرنسيون فعندهم "بروست".
