This novel begins with an odd inheritance at the end of a honeymoon, both parties being inexperienced. Then someone comes to visit, then another, until we've got a chaotic bedlam of New England's tragically off the wall odd ball relations. Our protagonists may not communicate efficiently at first but at least they've got a sense of humour. The humourous style keeps up as well as some moments of lustre and rich feeling about the printed word itself.

Sometimes mistakenly taken as a fictional narrative, the essay begins with three boys – of which Stevenson is one – who reside in a seaside town during the summer. Stevenson describes the various splendours of existence in the town, such as fishing, tide pools and the open sea air.

Es war der 29. Oktober 1933, drei Tage vor Samhain, in der das Tor zur Anderswelt weit offen stand, und die Toten geehrt wurden und man sich gleichzeitig vor den bösen Geistern schützen musste, als Inspektor Wolfford bei Holmes und Watson in der Baker Street auftauchte und um Hilfe bat. Die Hebamme Mrs. Hughes wurde tot in ihrer Wohnung aufgefunden. Um die Leiche herum wurden fünf Kürbisse platziert, jeder davon mit einer Fratze versehen und hell erleuchtet. Gleich mehrere Ungereimtheiten stachen Holmes ins Auge und somit stellte der Fall auch den Meisterdetektiv und seinen Gehilfen vor ein Rätsel.

Holmes und Watson waren zwar jetzt im Besitz eines Zettels, der die Vornamen der nächsten beiden Opfer preisgab. Doch wie sollten sie Inspektor Wolfford erklären, woher sie die Liste hatten? Zumal der Erhalt dieser Liste jegliche Logik von vorne herein ausschloss. Außerdem stellte sich noch die Frage, wer hinter dem dritten und letzten Opfer stecken sollte, da dieses nur mit einem Fragezeichen versehen war. Als Holmes und Watson schließlich auf das dritte Opfer, den Pfarrer Blake Bancroft, stießen, beschlich Holmes eine böse Vermutung, wer sich hinter dem letzten Opfer verbergen konnte.
