The Rebel Yell was a battle cry used by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War as a way to intimidate the enemy and to boost their own morale. The Rebel Yell stood in for the flag as a symbol of Confederate heritage and Southern defiance. At veteran’s reunions, the Rebel Yell represented Confederate heroism. In the first thirty or forty years of the twentieth century, a number of aging Confederate veterans got together for reunions and recorded their versions of the Rebel Yell. George Catlett Marshall Jr. (December 31, 1880-October 16, 1959) rose to become Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army during World War II under Presidents FDR and Truman, later serving as Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense under Truman. As Secretary of State, Marshall advocated for a U.S. economic and political commitment to post-war European recovery, including the Marshall Plan that bore his name. In recognition of this work, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953, the only Army general ever to receive the honor.

Mildred Gillars, nicknamed "Axis Sally," was an American broadcaster employed by Nazi Germany to disseminate propaganda during World War II. Following her capture after the war, she became the first woman to be convicted of treason against the United States. In March 1949, she was sentenced to ten to thirty years' imprisonment. She was released early in 1961. After being granted probation, Mildred converted to the Catholic faith and lived at the Our Lady Of Bethlehem Abbey in Columbus Ohio for several years.
