Each year, the storyteller, Hassan, gathers listeners to the city square to share their recollections of a young, foreign couple who mysteriously disappeared years earlier. As various witnesses describe their encounters with the couple, Hassan hopes to light upon the details that will explain what happened to them, and to absolve his own brother, who is in prison for their disappearance. but is this annual storytelling ritual a genuine attempt to uncover the truth, or is it intended instead to weave and ambiguous mythology around a crime?

It is the early '70s. Two best friends and a toddler (the future rock star Melissa Auf der Maur) set out in a red post office van on a 2,000-mile drive from Hay-on-Wye in Wales to Marrakesh in North Africa. Their meandering journey changes abruptly when they meet two American drug dealers from Amsterdam on a secret intelligence mission, with a plentiful supply of pure black Afghan hash. Amidst the dope smoking world of gangster aristocrats and dislocated hippies, they gaze into the hidden worlds within ancient Venetian glass goulamine beads, and that’s when worlds collide.

After the Songklam gang chases Stetson Jeff Stetson out of Thailand, he travels to Marrakesh, where he ends up in a camel race and discovers that a mysterious company called A.S.P. is up to no good. Will Stetson Jeff ever make it back to Texas? And is there any steak—or justice—to be had in Morocco?
