In 1960, the Imperial War Museum began a momentous task. A team of academics, archivists and volunteers set about tracing ordinary men and women who had lived through one of the most harrowing periods of modern history, the First World War. Veterans were interviewed in details about their day-to-day experiences, on and off the front. The project has since grown to be the most important archive of its kind in the world, and provides a unique account of life during the Great War.

Admiral Lord Collingwood, the eldest son of a Newcastle merchant, went to sea in 1761 at the age of 13. In his nearly fifty years in the Navy Collingwood's service took him to Boston, where he lived and fought during the American War of Independence; to Antigua, where he and Nelson both fell in love with Mary Moutray; to Corsica; Sicily; and Menorca, where he ended his career as the effective viceroy of the Mediterranean.

Nella storiografia recente, invece, grazie a studi più approfonditi e alla caduta di molti pregiudizi ideologici, la vita di Gengis Khan si è rivelata molto più complessa ed intrigante di quanto sarebbe potuta sembrare fino a pochi anni fa. Nel 2000 infine la consacrazione: il Whashington Post infatti ha nominato l'imperatore mongolo “uomo del millennio”.
