Archaeologist, woodsman and traveller Max Adams has written more than a dozen books on Early Medieval history and archaeology, on trees, woodlands and wood, alongside biography and a novel, The Ambulist.

Domesday, published in September 2026, is an account of 1000 miles of walks through a dozen of the counties described in the great survey, portraying the legacy of the Norman Conquest on the English and their landscapes ten centuries later. It coincides with the opening of the British Museum's Bayeux Tapestry exhibition. The book is illustrated with Max's own detailed and informative maps and photography; and he designed the typefaces and chapter motifs using exemplars in Domesday Book and the Bayeux Tapestry. He also reads the audiobook.

Two recent early medieval histories span the centuries during which England, and the English state, were being formed by imaginative, powerful kings, from Oswald and Edwin to Athelbald and Offa. The Mercian Chronicles and Northumbria AD 367-867, were both published in 2025.

You can find out more on Max's website, The Ambulist. There you'll find interviews, reviews, pages on books, travel, trees and woods. You can also keep up to date with book projects, signings, talks and other events. Copies of signed books can also be ordered there.
