Il libro è costituito da due cornici: la prima, che corrisponde all'inizio e alla fine della storia, si svolge nella biblioteca; la seconda, invece, è una lunga analessi e corrisponde agli eventi principali del romanzo. L'edizione proposta, nella lettura di Riccardo Fasol, è di pubblico dominio, e restituisce il piacere di ascoltare un classico senza tempo.

"Il fu Mattia Pascal", il romanzo più famoso e amato di Pirandello, scritto nel 1903, ruota attorno al tema dell'individualità e dell'introspezione. Il bibliotecario Mattia Pascal fugge da un matrimonio infelice a Montecarlo, dove riesce a vincere una discreta somma. Tornando a casa scopre dal giornale di essere morto. Il fu Mattia Pascal è un celebre romanzo di Luigi Pirandello che apparve dapprima a puntate sulla rivista "Nuova Antologia" nel 1904 e pubblicato, nello stesso anno, in volume. Fu il primo grande successo di Pirandello. Il libro è seguito da un commento dello stesso Pirandello , aggiunto in seguito.
