Persuasion, Jane Austen's last novel, is a tale of love and marriage told with irony and insight. Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth have met and seperated years before. The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long-lasting regret. When later Wentworth returns from sea a rich and successful captain, he finds Anne's family on the brink of financial ruin and his own sister a tenant in Kellynch Hall, the Elliot estate.

The year is 1838, and seventeen-year-old Julia Elliston's position has never been more fragile. The story represents an interesting configuration of Austen’s characteristic narrative patterns. The heroine, Anne Eliot, is something of an old maid—she is twenty-seven years old, still single and is considered by family and friends to have lost her youthful beauty. Several years earlier, her engagement to Captain Frederick Wentworth had been broken off, due to the insistence of her family that the Captain lacked the wealth and status needed for a suitable husband.

Anne Elliot is a young woman of perfect breeding and unwavering integrity. Seven years after she is persuaded to reject Captain Wentworth's offer of marriage, her feelings for him are still strong. By the time she realizes this, Wentworth seems to only have eyes for the attractive, though flighty, Louisa Musgrove. Set against the world of the country gentry in Regency England, Persuasion critically portrays the many aspects of proper society.

Jane Austen's Persuasion focuses on the regret and loneliness of Anne Elliot, who had rejected a proposal of marriage upon advice of a dear friend, from the one man she truly loved. The story takes place less than a decade after the proposal, following her simultaneous anticipation and dread of the rejected lover's return to the community. She struggles between the validity of the reasons for the old rejection and the flittering hope that their love had persevered.
