It is 1916, and war rages across Europe and the Middle East. Patrick Duffy is fighting in the fields of France, his cousin Matthew in the skies above Egypt. Meanwhile, at home, George Macintosh is passing information to the Germans, seeking to consolidate his power within the family company.

Berlin, 1900: Die junge Käthe verliebt sich in den Künstler Max Kruse, die beiden bekommen eine kleine Tochter. Eines Tages näht Käthe für sie eine Puppe. Sie erkennt ihr Talent und stürzt sich in die Arbeit, entwirft immer schönere Puppen. Als das Warenhaus Hermann Tietz einige zum Verkauf anbieten will, ist Käthe stolz - doch sie will mehr. Eine große Bestellung aus Amerika erreicht sie, und Käthe gründet in Bad Kösen ihre eigene Puppenmanufaktur. Aber ihr Glück ist getrübt, denn sie spürt, dass sie und Max sich immer weiter voneinander entfernen.

Mit der Begeisterung seiner Zeitgenossen zieht der Student Adolf Reisiger 1914 in den ersten Weltkrieg, die im Blut und Dreck des Stellungskrieges, der Giftgaseinsätze und Materialschlachten schnell erstickt. Das Grauen und der allgegenwärtige Tod verwandeln den kriegsbegeisterten Freiwilligen in einen überzeugten Pazifisten, der den Verstand zu verlieren droht und schließlich in die Irrenanstalt eingeliefert wird.

The Street is a short story by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft, written in late 1919 and first published in the December 1920 issue of the Wolverine amateur journal. The story traces the history of the titular street in a New England city, presumably Boston, from its first beginnings as "but a path" in colonial times to a quasi-supernatural occurrence in the years immediately following World War I.
