Tao Te Ching, attributed to the ancient Chinese sage Lao Tzu, is a foundational text of Taoist philosophy and one of the most translated works in world literature. Composed of 81 brief, poetic chapters, the book offers timeless wisdom on living in harmony with the Tao—the natural way or path of the universe.

This book details the history, rituals, and beliefs of the major traditional religions of China: universal animism, polydemonism, specters, ancestral worship, Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. He thought that one spiritual essence could be detected beneath a great variety of religious, philosophical, and even political expressions in China, and his lifework was the discovery and exposition of that essence.

A taoista gondolkodók műveiben minduntalan visszatérő motívum, hogy amikor valamelyik tanítvány a mestertől azt kérdezi, mi a tao, a mester mély hallgatásba merül. Mikor a tanítvány figyelmezteti, hogy mit kérdezett, a másik így szól: hiszen a mester megmondta, a tao annyi mint hallgatni. De nem csak ezt jelenti, hanem azt is, hogy nem cselekedni, nem törekedni, nem tevékenykedni, hanem lenni. A tao annyi, mint a földi lét minden mulandó esetlegességét levetni, és a változatlan, örök Nagy Lét békéjét elérni.

Kína i.e. hatodik századának két szellemóriása: Lao-ce és Konfu-ce. Tanításuk látszólag ellentétes, a mélyben mégis egybeér. Lao-ce a tao (az Út) világrendjébe történő, nem cselekvő beilleszkedést tanítja, míg Konfu-ce azt vallja: a bölcs fáradhatatlanul hirdesse felismert igazságát. A ma uralkodói trezorjaikban és hadseregükben bíznak. Ezért mondja már Platón, hogy ma már csak "demokráciák és önkényuralmak váltogatják egymást". A közép ismerete elveszett.
