You are walking through the streets of London. It is getting dark and you want to get home quickly. You enter a narrow side-street. Everything is quiet, but as you pass the door of a large, windowless building, you hear a key turning in the lock. A man comes out and looks at you. You have never seen him before, but you realize immediately that he hates you. You are shocked to discover, also, that you hate him. Who is this man that everybody hates?

What would you risk for your heart's desire? On the sunlit shores of Hawaii, Keawe discovers a mysterious bottle said to grant any wish—but at a perilous cost. With each wish granted, the shadows lengthen, forcing Keawe and those he loves to make impossible choices in this unforgettable fable about temptation, sacrifice, and the true price of happiness.

Skillfully narrated by storyteller Darla Middlebrook, this Robert Louis Stevenson tale of Keawe, a poor Hawaiian man, who buys a strange bottle from a sad, elderly gentleman who credits the bottle with his fortune. The elderly gentleman promises that an imp residing in the bottle will also grant Keawe his every desire. Of course, there is a catch - the bottle must be sold at a loss, i.e. for less than its owner originally paid, or else it will simply return to him. The currency used in the transaction must also be in coin (not paper money or a bank check).

This is a story from the The Body Snatcher and Other Stories collection.
