Cadfael est chargé de préparer les corps avant qu'ils ne soient rendus à leur famille ou enterrés. Mais en les alignant, il découvre qu'il y a un cadavre de trop. Il lui faudra beaucoup de diplomatie et d'esprit pour résoudre ce mystère. À noter l'arrivée de Hugh Beringar à Shrewsbury.
