Ransom and Britt attempt to settle into a new life, but a dreadful threat is constantly hanging over their heads. The settlers in Tucson know their time is limited. An invasion is underway. Peggy is adamant they can destroy the Glass, but it will take a trip to another time and place to ensure it remains off. Cedric, under a cloud of doubt, must decide where his true allegiance leans. There is hope—a military base with something that could change the tides of their future. No one seems to have remembered the base exists, but they search for their salvation.

Raider, Yaeger and Diesel all try to keep the humans they own and protect safe, but the enemy seems to come in overwhelming numbers and better supplied than the humans left at the homestead.

The world has become a dangerous place. Despite the environmentalists' best efforts, the atmosphere has turned toxic, destroying almost all life—plants, animals and most of humanity, too. Survivors live in domes protected by chitin shields, serving one or other of the two great companies, Lord Vane's Tempestas or Lord Sine's Genrich, with their very different visions for mankind's future. A long period of uneasy collaboration between them is about to end.
