A series of grisly murders rocks London. At each location, only a jumble of bones remains of the deceased, along with a bizarre sphere covered in strange symbols. The son of the latest victim seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes and his former partner, Dr. John Watson. They discover the common thread tying together the murders. It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe, eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty, is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick’s calling card.

1903. Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson have tickets to the newly arrived Egyptian Circus. Holmes is puzzled by his brother Mycroft's cryptic gift but is intrigued enough to attend the next production. The performers, dressed as wondrous half-animal, half-human gods from Egyptian mythology, display superhuman agility and stunts. The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the four crime novels by Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Lovecraft sah ich mich aber gezwungen doch zumindest im kleinen Kreise Rechenschaft abzugeben und einen Bericht zu verfassen, der eine nüchternere Einschätzung der Ereignisse wieder gibt und sich nicht zu weit ins abenteuerliche Phantastische begibt.

Zu Holmes und Watsons Leidwesen lässt sich Alice natürlich nicht davon abbringen, die beiden nach Transsilvanien zu begleiten. Holmes beschließt den Grafen in seinem Schloss aufzusuchen und den Dingen direkt vor Ort auf den Grund zu gehen.
