Collecting over twenty-five essays written by more than twenty California Indian authors, Know We Are Here surveys many of the ways California's Indigenous communities are resisting the legacies of genocide. Focusing on the particular histories, challenges, and dynamics of life in Native California—which are often very different from elsewhere in the United States—the book collects essays from writers across the state. It encompasses the perspectives of both elders and the rising generation, and the contributors include activists, academics, students, memoirists, and tribal leaders.

When Tilly receives an invitation to help drive eight elders on their ultimate bucket list road trip to New Mexico for the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow, she impulsively says yes. Before she knows it, Tilly is on an adventure that will transform her in ways she could not predict, just as it will for each and every one of the seniors on the trip, who soon dub themselves “the Crazy Eights.” Tilly and the Crazy Eights each choose a stop to make along the way - and each stop becomes the inspiration for secrets and stories to be revealed.

When a beautiful woman arrives, fleeing from her abusive husband, the people know what they must do - for if the Spirits are already taking the animals away, what will happen if they shelter a stranger?
