Tra la fine del 1829 ed i primi mesi del 1830, Leopardi compose la canzone Canto notturno di un pastore errante dell'Asia. Nel comporre tale poesia, Leopardi trasse ispirazione dalla lettura del Voyage d'Orenbourg à Boukhara fait en 1820 del barone russo Meyendorff, nel quale si narrava di come certi pastori dell'Asia centrale, appartenenti alla popolazione Kirghisa, fossero soliti intonare lunghe e dolci nenie rivolgendosi alla luna piena.

Con il sopraggiungere della malattia, Gozzano inizia ad amare e raccontare le cose semplici come starsene in cucina oppure esiliato in una villa solitaria lontano dalle lotte brutali e dai turbini violenti, lontano dal clamore dalla folla: nasce così il personaggio di Toto Merumeni, l'uomo dalla spaventosa chiaroveggenza, dal buon gusto nelle opere d'inchiostro, dallo scarso cervello e dalla tempra sdegnosa.

Il Poeta scrisse questa lirica a Firenze, tra la primavera e l'estate del 1831. E' questa l'unica lirica leopardiana in cui trionfa musicalmente variata, l'estasi dell'amore. Vero inno, che vibra dell'ineffabile gioia di un cuore innammorato e di un animo grande, per cui l'amore è volontà di perfezione, espressione di vita eroica, anticipazione di vita celeste.
