Speedway was a prime-time sport in the 1970s and 1980s. Its most successful riders were household names, and events would be held in venues as large as Wembley Stadium, attracting tens of thousands of spectators. In a time of only three terrestrial TV channels in the UK, you were guaranteed to find Speedway racing on one of them on a Saturday afternoon. At one point, London alone was home to 11 separate clubs. Today it has none. So what put this once-dominant sport on the slide?

Meet Revver: a little squirrel with big dreams...to drive a race car! His siblings might not understand his need for speed, but Revver doesn’t care. And he certainly doesn’t care about looking for food, climbing trees or any other "ordinary" squirrel activity. He spends his days staring at the racetrack just below his nest, where the cars zoom by day in and day out. When Revver finally gets the chance to sneak out to the track, he finds that becoming part of the pit crew is more difficult than he expected.

Motorsports and racing of many kinds have a giant history both here at home in the United States and abroad. Sadly, history hasn't always been as kind to the facilities that helped make that history and grow the sport. The ghosts of the past are littered around the country as relics of that history.
