When Leora Ebersole sees the small plane crash in her Old Order Mennonite community, she has no idea it's a foreshadowing of things to come. When a catastrophic solar storm brings about the collapse of modern civilization, an Amish community in Pennsylvania is caught up in the devastating aftermath. Once-bright skies are now dark. Planes have plummeted to the ground. The systems of modern life have crumbled. With their stocked larders and stores of supplies, the Amish are unaffected at first. But as the English (the Amish name for all non-Amish people) become more and more desperate, they begin to invade Amish farms.

As a young man growing up in an Amish family, Amos struggles to fit in. Slow in school, overweight, and afflicted with terrible acne, he feels he's a constant disappointment to his mother, sisters, teachers, and employers. Convinced that he will never be good enough for them, he leaves home and accepts a job as a live-in groundskeeper for an “English” (non-Amish) couple. Gradually, he moves toward a healthier, more confident version of himself. But he can't leave behind the fact that living as an English person is the greatest disappointment to his family yet.
