Gemeinsam mit Djangeh bleibt ihm nur die Flucht den Nil hinauf. Doch der Arm der Bruderschaft reicht weit. Abd el Barak setzt einen Meuchelmörder auf sie an. Der Strudel der Ereignisse zieht Kara Ben Nemsi in den Konflikt zwischen dem Reis Effendina, dem „Kapitän des Vizekönigs“, und dem gnadenlosen Sklavenjäger Ibn Asl.

Ausgestattet mit weiterem Geld des Händlers Murat Nassyr und mit neuen Leuten holt Ibn Asl zum vernichtenden Schlag gegen den Reis Effendina aus. Zugleich eröffnet Abd Asl, der "Diener des Ursprungs", die Jagd auf Kara Ben Nemsi und seine Begleiter.

Am Oberen Nil gelingt es Kara Ben Nemsi und seinem Begleiter Ben Nil, Ibn Asls Versteck, die Seribah Aliab, zu finden. Zwar kann der Reis Effendina mit seinen Asakern die Seribah einnehmen, der Anführer der Sklavenjäger ist aber nicht dort. Von dem frustrierten Geschäftsmann Murat Nassyr erfahren Kara Ben Nemsi und der Reis Effendina von Ibn Asls nächstem Ziel: Er will mit seinen Leuten und aufgehetzten Dinka-Kriegern Wagunda überfallen, das größte aller Gohk-Dörfer, um dort Sklaven zu machen.
