Published to great acclaim in 1873, Walter Pater’s compendium of idiosyncratic, impressionistic essays on the Renaissance gained him a reputation as a daring modern philosopher. Oscar Wilde called it the “holy writ of beauty.” It was Pater’s cry of “art for art’s sake” that became the manifesto for the aesthetic movement. He believed that art should be sensual and that beauty should rank as the highest ideal. Marked by elegant fluency, Pater’s essays discuss Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and other artists who, for him, embodied the spirit of the Renaissance.

"There is no book of mine about which I more thoroughly feel that I swear by every sentence as having been written with my best blood." Thus wrote George Eliot about Romola, the book which is central in her career as a novelist and amongst her most colorful, fluent, and persuasive works. Set in Florence in 1492, a time of great political and religious turmoil, Eliot's novel blends vivid fictional characters with historical figures such as Savonarola, Machiavelli, and the Medicis.

Pubblicato nel 1850, "La lettera scarlatta" è uno dei più importanti romanzi nordamericani dell'Ottocento. Nelle intenzioni dell'autore esso doveva rappresentare al meglio lo spirito puritano dell'epoca coloniale americana. Nella società puritana la libertà dell'individuo coincideva con il bene della comunità, che doveva essere purificata da ogni elemento estraneo, considerato al soldo di Satana. Per questa ragione le autorità imponevano stili di vita improntati a un inflessibile rigore morale.

Paris, 1614. Louis XIII n'est qu'un jeune garçon de quatorze ans. La reine mère Marie de Médicis est régente et les Concini abusent de sa faiblesse pour usurper le pouvoir et piller le trésor royal. Nous sommes à Paris en 1609, Henri IV règne sur la France pacifiée. Le chevalier de Pardaillan, qui n'a pas retrouvé son fils, rencontre un jeune truand, Jehan-le-Brave, en qui il ne tarde pas à reconnaître l'enfant de Fausta. Or, Jehan-le-Brave, qui ignore tout de ses origines, est amoureux de Bertille de Saugis, fille naturelle d'Henri IV.

Évidemment, Pardaillan père et fils se sont retrouvés et reconnus. Une fois encore, les chevaliers de Pardaillan se montrent dépourvus d'avidité, eux pour qui la réussite n'est jamais matérielle. Dans ce nouvel épisode, Michel Zévaco nous brosse un tableau attachant du fils de Pardaillan qui fait honneur à son père. En France, la menace pèse toujours sur Henri IV et un certain Ravaillac entre en scène et le trésor de la Fausta reste introuvable.
