The Decameron is one of the greatest literary works of the Middle Ages. Ten young people have fled the terrible effects of the Black Death in Florence and, in an idyllic setting, tell a series of brilliant stories, by turns humorous, bawdy, tragic and provocative. Fernab der Stadt geben sich die Freunde Spielen und Tanz hin und erzählen einander frivole Geschichten von glücklich Verliebten, gehörnten Ehemännern und listigen Frauen. Zehn Tage bleiben sie auf dem Landgut, und am Ende haben sie hundert Geschichten beisammen - auf diese Weise, so erzählt es Boccaccio, sei das »Decamerone« entstanden.

Sieben Frauen und drei junge Männer sind vor der Pest, die im Jahr 1348 in Florenz wütet, in ein Landhaus vor den Toren der Stadt geflüchtet. Hier versuchen sie sich, so gut es geht, zu unterhalten. Also wird jeden Tag jemand bestimmt, der sich eine Geschichte ausdenken und diese dann erzählen soll. Es werden wunderbare Geschichten erzählt, meist mit der Liebe als zentrales Thema. Denn die Liebe ist vielseitig: Mal ist sie ein vergnüglicher Zeitvertreib, mal verzehrende Leidenschaft. Mal zeigt sie sich in tiefer Verehrung und mal als unbändige Sehnsucht.

Daß Liebe auch eine Frage der Perspektive ist, zeigt diese Geschichte. Der Liebhaber einer verheirateten Frau verlangt drei ungeheuerliche Liebesbeweise, die diese auch erbringt. Daß sich der Gatte am Ende auf einem Birnbaum wiederfindet und der Angetrauten beim Liebesspiel mit dem Liebhaber zusehen muß, erklärt sich nur mit weiblicher Raffinesse...
