In the middle of the American Second Civil War, born with a face that is half black and half white, Jetta belongs nowhere. In New Orleans, where she lives with her grandmother after her parents' death, she is believed to be a demon come to curse them all. Everywhere in the town, the blacks - or people of any color - are being persecuted and, one day, Jetta is moved by the white military and shipped outside of the city walls to live in a closed ghetto along with the rest of New Orleans' many blacks. But Jetta is not black.

Nur knapp konnte Esther Luke und seinen Anhängern entfliehen. Einzig die Hilfe von Nick, dem Mann, der eigentlich selbst zu der düsteren Bande gehört, rettete sie vor weiteren Demütigungen. Zutiefst verängstigt, all ihrer persönlichen Gegenstände beraubt und mit jemandem an der Seite, dem sie nicht vertraut, verlässt sie die Stadt. Schon bald wird ihr bewusst, dass sie nicht mehr in der Gegend bleiben kann und ihren Unterschlupf aufgeben muss. Dass sie dabei zwangsläufig auf die Hilfe eines Fremden angewiesen ist, macht es umso schlimmer.

Esther und ihre Freunde haben ein tolles Weihnachtsfest miteinander verbracht. Noch schöner ist die Tatsache, dass sie und Nick sich endlich nähergekommen sind. Alles hätte nicht besser laufen können - doch dann kommt der Funkspruch. Ein Funkspruch, der Esther sofort zurück in ihren schlimmsten Albtraum katapultiert, der die Gruppe dazu zwingt, in den Krieg zu ziehen. Im Lager kommt es zum großen Showdown. Holt sie nun ihre Vergangenheit ein?

Scheinbar wendet sich alles zum Guten. Nick und Esther haben einen festen Platz in der Gemeinschaft gefunden und tragen ihren Teil dazu bei. Routine scheint einzukehren, und Esther fühlt sich immer sicherer. Als der Winter kommt, zieht die Gruppe vorübergehend in ein nahegelegenes Dorf, wo sie der Kälte besser trotzen können. Selbst Weihnachten wollen sie dort feiern. Alles könnte so schön sein, doch Esther fühlt sich zu sehr von den Männern bevormundet. Und dann passiert das, wovor sie die ganze Zeit schon Angst hatte.

Sie haben die Schießerei überlebt. Nicht nur Nick und Esther, sondern auch Ben und Karla, die ihnen unverhofft zur Hilfe kamen. Nun schlagen sie sich durch die Wälder, auf der Suche nach einer neuen Unterkunft. Ihre Feinde scheinen sie endlich hinter sich gelassen zu haben, doch nun stellt sich eine viel wichtigere Frage: Wie soll es weitergehen? All ihrer Besitztümer beraubt, fühlt Esther sich den anderen ausgeliefert. Und dann geben Ben und Karla auch noch zu, dass sie nicht ganz ehrlich waren. Können Nick und Esther ihnen noch trauen?
