La historia comienza de forma epistolar, con la lectura de tres cartas. La primera de ellas la envía Natanael a su amigo Lotario, quien es a la vez el hermano de su prometida Clara. Por equivocarse al poner el destinatario, es Clara quien finalmente lee la carta. Un relato del trauma por la muerte de su padre que vive el joven Nathanaël, quien a pesar de estar comprometido, se enamora de un autómata, Olimpia, construida por Spalanzani y un cómplice. Nathanael cree que ésta es real. El descubrimiento del truco lo lleva a la locura, y a un final conmocionante.

El Hombre de Arena (Der Sandmann) es el cuento más célebre de E.T.A. Hoffmann. Publicado en 1817 en sus Cuentos nocturnos (Nachtstücke), es el cuento más representativo del máximo autor del género del romanticismo negro (Schwarze Romantik, conocido también como literatura del terror gótico) durante el siglo XIX. El cuento relata la vida de un muchacho llamado, Nathanaël, quien está traumatizado por la muerte de su padre, que murió en muy extrañas circunstancias, ocurrida durante su infancia.
