Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1776-1822), noto con lo pseudonimo di E. T. A. Hoffmann, fu il primo scrittore a mettere su carta la storia dello schiaccianoci, oggetto molto in voga nell’Ottocento e che faceva bella mostra di sé nei mercatini di Natale di tutta la Germania.Il racconto dell’autore tedesco (che fu inoltre pittore, compositore e giurista) venne pubblicato nel 1816 e ispirò anche la versione di Alexandre Dumas, dalla quale Tchaïkovski trarrà uno dei balletti più famosi di tutti i tempi.I piccoli protagonisti della favola sono Marie e Fritz, due bambini in trepidante attesa dei doni di Natale.

Hoffmanns berühmteste spätromantische Erzählung aus den "Nachtstücken" von 1817 thematisiert die Nachtseiten eines bürgerlichen Lebens und beschreibt lange vor den Erkenntnissen der Psychoanalyse den vergeblichen Versuch des männlichen Individuums, Ängste, Träume, Wünsche und Fantasien zu verdrängen. Im Sandmann hält der Student Nathanael eine geniale Erfindung, den "Automaten" Olimpia, für die verständnisvollere und liebreizendere Gefährtin, wodurch er die Beziehung zu seiner Verlobten Clara zerstört.

In tiefes Leid versenkt saß Fräulein Ännchen einsam in ihrem Zimmer als die Türe aufging und niemand anders hereintrat, als der Herr Amandus von Nebelstern. Ganz Reue und Scham vergoss Fräulein Ännchen einen Tränenstrom und bat in den kläglichsten Tönen: "O mein herzlieber Amandus, verzeihe doch nur, was ich dir in meiner Verblendung geschrieben! Aber ich war ja verhext und bin es wohl noch.
