This 1754 work by Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is subtitled An Inquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions of the Freedom of the Will Which Is Supposed to Be Essential to Moral Agency, Virtue and Vice, Reward and Punishment, Praise and Blame. Edwards was a Christian reformer, theologian, and author in the Calvinist tradition, and in this work he explores the necessity of divine grace for the redeeming of the damaged will of humanity. He contends that free will is an extension of, and connected to, the grace of God.

Jonathan Edwards, often referred to as America’s greatest theologian, lived from 1703-1758. He was wonderfully used by God in the American Great Awakening. This sermon is taken from Revelation 5:5-6, which pictures Jesus Christ as both a Lion and a Lamb. Using this dual imagery of the Lion and the Lamb, Edwards magnified Christ in his majestic person as both God and man. Jonathan Edwards lived from 1703-1758, and was used by God in the American Great Awakening. He is often referred to as America’s greatest theologian. This sermon was preached to encourage every person to make every effort to get into the kingdom of God—that none should be left out. Edwards opened the sermon by defining “pressing into” the kingdom, explaining why every one should earnestly seek it. He reminded the hearers that, by nature, all are in a perishing necessity of salvation, utterly lost when outside the kingdom.

This is the quintessential hellfire and damnation sermon. It is one of the most important sermons ever preached in America and reportedly caused mass conversions and repentances during the "Great Awakening" back in 1741. The vivid imagery Edwards used reportedly made some of those who heard it tremble and cry out for mercy. It is an important piece of American Literature, even for those those who totally disagree with the author's view of God as vengeful, angry and a bit cruel.
