LibriVox volunteers bring you 20 recordings of The Trenches by Frederic Manning. This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for October 30, 2011 to mark this year's festivals of remembrance.Manning was an Australian poet living in England at the outbreak of the First World War. He enlisted in the King's Shropshire Light Infantry, and was in action at the Battle of the Somme. This poem paints a vivid picture of the horror of night in the trenches. The 1914-18 conflict narrated through the voices of the men whose combat was in the air. The empty chairs belonged, all too briefly, to the doomed young First World War airmen who failed to return from the terrifying daily aerial combats above the trenches of the Western Front. The edict of their commander in chief was the missing aviators were to be immediately replaced. Before the new faces could arrive, the departed men's vacant seats at the dinner table were sometimes poignantly occupied by their caps and boots, placed there in a sad ritual by their surviving colleagues. 

After a miraculous escape from the German military juggernaut in the small Belgian town of Mons in 1914, the first major battle that the British Expeditionary Force would face in the First World War, the British really believed that they were on the side of the angels. Indeed, after 1916, the number of spiritualist societies in the United Kingdom almost doubled, from 158 to 309. 

Harry Lamin was born in Derbyshire in 1877 and left school at 13 to work in the lace industry. But by December 1916 he had been conscripted into the 9th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, and sent to war. Harry's letters home to his family describe the conflict with a poignant immediacy, even 90+ years on, detailing everything from the action in battle to the often amusing incidents of life amongst his comrades.

The showdown should have been a brief affair, where the German Empire put its neighbours in their place. Encouraged by the spirit of adventure thousands of young men volunteered to defend the nation’s honour. On the other hand, in France, Britain and Russia optimism was just as high: the troops would be home by Christmas. But the reality was quite different. Soon the lines were locked in a deadly mud hell in the heart of Europe, and despite new weapons like poison gas, submarines, tanks and aircraft the war was protracted.
