Ernie and Wilma Bean have finally made it! Their lucky number has won the special Christmas lottery. Wilma is out of town, though, and it's tough to keep news like that a secret for too long. It couldn't hurt to celebrate a little with Loretta Thistlebottom, could it? In another story, the country cabin where Mike spent so many idyllic summers with his grandmother ought to be the perfect place for his wife, Laurie, to recover from the nightmares of her childhood. But now that Mike and Laurie have arrived, what could be causing such an ominous feeling to come over both of them?

There is an African proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi,” which translates as “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.” This is why we continue to remember the tales of struggle and tales of perseverance, even as we look to tales of hope. What a people choose to remember about their past, the stories they pass down, informs who they are and sets the boundaries of their identity. We remember the pain of our past to mourn, to heal, and to learn. Only in that way can we ensure the same mistakes are not repeated.

This collection contains nine early stories featuring the Continental Op, an un-named middle-aged detective working for the San Francisco branch of the fictional Continental Detective Agency. The stories are narrated in the first person. The “hardboiled detective” voice was later used by author Dashiell Hammett in The Maltese Falcon (Sam Spade) and the Thin Man series of stories.

When a mysterious female visitor leaves her hat with a message at the door of Mrs. Hudson, Holmes and Watson find themselves always one or more steps behind a thief who leaves intriguing messages and challenges the great detective, again and again, to apprehend her. Though the clues are there, they leave Holmes completely baffled.
