Odín vive con preocupación la impulsividad de Thor. Son ya demasiadas las veces en que su hijo, aguijoneado por una vanidosa imprudencia, ha puesto en peligro con sus acciones temerarias a aquellos a quienes debería proteger. Odín decide tomar cartas en el asunto y, para poner coto al carácter irreflexivo del dios del trueno, urde una arriesgada estratagema.
