Story1
Though unappreciated in his own time, Johann Sebastian Bach has ascended to Olympian heights, the verdict of contemporary audiences long since overruled by succeeding generations of music lovers. But what makes his music great? In this series of 32 lectures, a working composer and musicologist brings his exceptional teaching skills to the task of helping you hear the extraordinary sweep of Bach's music. You'll understand the compositional language that enabled him to compose such extravagant, unbridled music while still maintaining precise control of every aspect - beat, melody, melodic repetition, interaction, and harmony.

Over the centuries, poets have reminded us of the values we are in danger of forgetting as a society. The ideas of liberty, equality, fraternity and justice — the very values enshrined in our Constitution — have endured over centuries in the Bhakti tradition. The Bhakti poets always challenged the ideologies of their times that attempted to force the belief that people were not equal. In this show, we explore the histories of these ideas in Bhakti poetry, and how they find resonance in the values underpinning the Constitution of a modern republic. We take you on a listening experience to ...

Story0
The most basic definition of music is simply the art of arranging sounds in time through the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. And in fact, it is one of the universal cultural aspects of all human societies. It's performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques, and the common saying "it's music to my ears" underlines the notion that music is quite simply something people enjoy listening to! In every culture, music is an important part of people's way of life.

On May 8, 1977, at Barton Hall, on the Cornell University campus, in front of 8,500 eager fans, the Grateful Dead played a show so significant that the Library of Congress inducted it into the National Recording Registry. The band had just released Terrapin Station and was still finding its feet after an extended hiatus. In 1977, the Grateful Dead reached a musical peak, and their East Coast spring tour featured an exceptional string of performances. Many Deadheads claim that the quality of the live recording of the show made by Betty Cantor-Jackson elevated its importance.

Throughout his career, Johnny Cash was depicted - and depicted himself - as a walking contradiction: social protestor and establishment patriot, drugged wildman and devout Christian crusader, rebel outlaw hillbilly thug and elder statesman. Leigh H. Edwards explores the allure of this paradoxical image and its cultural significance. She argues that Cash embodied irresolvable contradictions of American identity that reflect foundational issues in the American experience.

Story0
One of the most formal and demanding genres of dance, ballet has enthralled audiences with its grace, precision, and remarkable feats of dexterity. Its early roots can be traced back to the 16th century, when court dances were performed for Italian and French royalty. After spreading throughout Europe, ballet flourished in 19th-century Russia, the home of some of the world's greatest dancers and choreographers. Once these dancers traveled to America in the 20th century, ballet began to evolve as the style came in contact with the burgeoning modern dance movement.
