Artemisias einziges Ziel im Leben ist es, eine Graue Schwester zu werden. Diese Nonnen sorgen dafür, dass die Seelen der Verstorbenen ins Jenseits übergehen können. Als ihr Konvent von einer Armee besessener Soldaten angegriffen wird, erweckt Artemisia ausversehen den uralten und bösartigen Geist eines Revenanten, was sie fast umbringt. Zugleich hat der Tod in Loraille Einzug gehalten und nur eine Vespertine hat eine Chance ihn aufzuhalten.
