Robert W. Chambers (1865-1933) spent his formative years studying art in Paris during the late 1880s and early 1890s. Upon returning to America, he quickly gained fame for his romantic novels, but he ultimately became best known for “The King In Yellow,” a haunting collection of short stories that delve into the eerie and otherworldly. In this episode, we explore the latter tales of the collection, which shift gears to present straightforward love stories, richly infused with Chambers experiences as an artist in France. Best known for her short story The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, an almost exact contemporary of Edith Wharton, is celebrated as one of America’s foremost feminist writers. This collection includes 28 of her short stories. In addition to The Yellow Wallpaper are The Unexpected (her first published work), The Great Wistaria, An Extinct Angel, The Unnatural Mother and Deserted. These stories range from the subversive to the humorous, and are often imbued with satire and social commentary.

The story's protagonist and narrator is an unnamed woman whose husband, a doctor named John, makes her spend the summer in the country for her health. The woman, her baby, John, John's sister and some servants stay in a large rented house. John chooses a bedroom for himself and his wife which is large and airy but otherwise quite unpleasant. The narrator takes an immediate dislike to the room's yellow wallpaper. She soon starts to see grotesque images in its pattern. After some time, the narrator becomes convinced that the wallpaper depicts a woman trapped behind a cage.

Skillfully narrated by voice actor Mark Turetsky, The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers is a classic in the field of the supernatural. The series of 10 short stories is named after a fictional play of the same name which induces madness in the minds of those that read it. The Yellow King and Carcosa were often alluded to in a popular TV series True Detective, where evil and madness are often a theme.

During the Victorian era the publishing of magazines and periodicals accelerated at a phenomenal rate. This really was mass market publishing to a hungry audience eager for literary sustenance. Many of our greatest authors contributed and expanded their reach whilst many fledging authors also found a ready source for their nascent works and careers.
