Lao Zi is believed to have been born in 604, during the Chou Dynasty. Little is known of his life and there is some speculation that he was mythical.

In 1597, a series of witch trials were held in Scotland which resulted in about 200 executions. The King in Yellow is a collection of 10 short stories on supernatural subjects first published 1895. The title refers to a mysterious play which causes derangement in the minds of those who read or see it, and which is mentioned in the first four stories.

Among the many characters created by Robert E. Howard, the most celebrated is the moody iconoclast Conan the Barbarian. These three stories depict some of his adventures involving encounters with his many enemies and unlikely allies.
