The Rome Zoo - a place borne of fantasy and driven by a nation’s aspirations. It has witnessed - and reflected in its tarnished mirror - the great follies of the 20th century. Now, in an ongoing battle that has seen it survive world wars and epidemics, the zoo must once again reinvent itself and assert its relevance in the Eternal City.

Doctor Dolittle returns from his voyages and sets his house in order. This includes expanding his zoo to include a home for crossbred dogs and a club for rodents. Doctor Dolittle's Zoo is different from all others because there are no cages; the animals stay there voluntarily and are free to leave whenever they want.

Theodora "Teddy" Bentley, zookeeper at the Gunn Zoo, takes the zoo's llama, Alejandro, to a Renaissance fair in the Monterey Bay area. That is where Teddy discovers the still-warm body of the Reverend Victor Emerson, owner of the local wedding chapel, dressed in his costume as Henry the Eighth. At first it appears that Alejandro stomped the man to death, but a closer look shows a crossbow dart in the man’s back.

When zookeeper Theodora “Teddy” Bentley fishes the body of Koala Kate out of Gunn Landing Harbor, she discovers that her fellow zookeeper didn’t drown; she was strangled. The clues to Koala Kate’s killer implicate other animal keepers at the Gunn Zoo, including Outback Bill, marsupial keeper and Kate’s Aussie ex-boyfriend.

When Katie Underwood discovers a litter of abandoned mountain-lion cubs, the last person she expects the zoo to send over is Bowie Wilson, her former crush and high-school bully. And the worst part? He doesn't even remember her. So as soon as they rescue the cougars, Katie plans to permanently part ways with the infuriatingly attractive zookeeper. But a lovelorn camel, a matchmaking honey badger, and a nursemaid capybara have completely different plans.
