Dr. Huang hates Benjamin. Benjamin threw Dr. Huang out of Homer Memorial Golf & Country Club for being a pervert and having a fluid gender identity for subversive purposes. But Dr. Huang got lucky after Benjamin got knocked out by a stray golf ball. After the trauma, Benjamin ends up in the hospital with a futuristic probe inserted between the hemispheres of his brain-a probe implanted by Dr. Huang. Benjamin awakes in a dream-like environment at the first tee box at Homer Memorial. But only to be challenged to a golf match by the three sisters of fate, Nona, Decima, and Morta.

Melvin Levin is a middle-aged man who is dissatisfied with his dull and mediocre life. That is, he was until he received a mysterious death threat in the mail. Terrified at first, Levin soon becomes accustomed to the threat—and then, increasingly, delighted with it, thrilled with his newfound importance as a “threatened man.” But as his obsession with maintaining this identity becomes all-consuming, he risks blinding himself to the twin dangers of the threat itself and—perhaps worse—his own deranged mind.

Hawthorne presents several ideas which form the very core of the conservative critique: that man's sinfulness is an immutable part of his character; that rationalists, reformers, and progressives delude themselves with their utopian notions of the perfectibility of man; that in their delusion they do incalculable damage to the culture, while leaving human nature untouched; and that, no matter the "progress" they make, evil lurks, waiting to rear its ugly head and shatter their dreams.

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was born in Salem, Massachusetts. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added W to make his name Hawthorne in order to hide his relation. The Scarlet Letter, his most famous novel, was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels, including The House of the Seven Gables, and various short stories. "The British Matron" is a satirical essay.
