From this continent their fame spread and whilst among their number many are now forgotten or neglected their talents endure. Among them is the talented Arthur Sherburne Hardy.

Willa Sibert Cather was born on 7th December, 1873 on her grandmother's farm in the Back Creek Valley near Winchester, Virginia. After several years and moves the family eventually settled in Red Cloud, Nebraska and for the first time Cather could now attend school. In Red Cloud, Cather had her earliest writings published in the local Red Cloud Chief newspaper. Her time in the mid-West created a vivid tranche of experiences for the young woman.

In this Italian set story two Englishmen fall into problems over their love for a coquettish Genoese girl. When she turns both their lives upside down horrendous consequences inevitably follow.

Wilkie Collins was born on 8th January 1824 in Marylebone, London. He pursued his education at Mr Cole’s private boarding school in Highbury, Islington. Here, he began his literary career under unusual circumstances: the school bully would give him no peace until he had been told a bedtime story. This ‘little brute’ helped create one of England’s greatest writers.

Dorothy Kathleen Broster was born on 2nd September 1877 at Devon Lodge in Grassendale Park, Garston, Liverpool. Her novels, mainly historical fiction, peaked in popularity with ‘The Flight of the Heron’, in 1925, a best-seller followed up by two sequels. As well as poetry and various articles she also wrote several short stories, the best known of which is a classic of weird fiction ‘The Couching at the Door’ in which an artist appears to be haunted by a mysterious entity.

Sax Rohmer was born on February 15th, 1883 as Arthur Henry Sarsfield in Birmingham to working class parents. Rohmer started his career as a civil servant but soon had ambitions to change careers and write full time. Not content with just fiction he wrote poetry, songs as well as comedy sketches for music hall performers. From these varied beginnings he reinvented himself as Sax Rohmer.

Tom Hood was born on the 19th January 1835 at Lake House, Leytonstone just outside of London, the son of the famed poet Thomas Hood. Hood began writing at Oxford and first published soon after his arrival there. Much of his work is humourous or for children (which his sister co-authored) but he also wrote novels, two books on English verse composition and short stories as well as many pieces for magazines and periodicals. Hood was also a talented artist and illustrated several of his father's comic verses.

Her literary style was very successful and, although by modern standards would be called ‘romance’, in those days it was considered racy and erotic fiction. She coined the first use of the word the ‘It girl’. In the 1920’s Glyn went to Hollywood, for the filming of her novel ‘The Great Moment’. Thereafter she was engaged to write stories and screenplays and became one of the most famous and successful women screenwriters of the era.
