It is an important utopian work, was inspired by Plato's Republic, and describes a theocratic society where goods, women, and children are held in common.

Julien Offray de La Mettrie, geboren 1709 in Saint-Malo und gestorben 1751 in Potsdam, war ein französischer Arzt und Philosoph. Durch seine Schrift "Der Mensch eine Maschine" wurde er zu einem wichtigen Denker des Materialismus. In seiner Schrift hebt er den Dualismus von Geist und Materie auf, polemisiert aber auch scharfsinnig all zu rationalistische Variationen der Vernunft. Dem setzt er eine die Sinnfreuden bejahende und individualistische Haltung entgegen. Nebst Verfolgung von Kirche und Zensur wurde er auch von den französischen Philosophen der Aufklärung totgeschwiegen und dann aus ihrem "Kreis der Philosophen" ausgeschlossen.

La Bruyère est célèbre pour une œuvre unique, "Les caractères ou Les mœurs de ce siècle" (1688). Cet ouvrage, constitué d'un ensemble de brèves pièces littéraires, compose une chronique essentielle de l'esprit du XVIIe siècle.
