Aristotle's Poetics is best known for its definition and analysis of tragedy and comedy, but it also applies to truth and beauty as they are manifested in the other arts. In our age, when the natural and social sciences have dominated the quest for truth, it is helpful to consider why Aristotle claimed: "poetry is more philosophical and more significant than history." Like so many other works by Aristotle, the Poetics has dominated the way we have thought about all forms of dramatic performance in Europe and America ever since.

In Euthyphro, Socrates is on his way to the court where he must defend himself against serious charges brought by religious and political authorities. Plato lived in Athens, Greece. He wrote approximately two-dozen dialogues that explore core topics that are essential to all human beings.

The full title of Seneca’s work Of Providence is "Why do misfortunes happen to good men, if providence exists?". The longer title reflects the essay’s theme which is more concerned with theodicy and the question of why bad things happen to good people, rather than with providence. The essay is written as a dialogue in six brief sections, opened by Lucilius complaining to his friend Seneca that misfortunes befall to good people too. How does this fit with the goodness associated with the design of providence?

The Nature of Things was written in the 1st century BC by Roman polymath Lucretius. It is written as a didactic poem, and explains Epicurean physics.

En Apología de Sócrates, Platón da una versión del discurso que Sócrates pronunció como defensa, ante los tribunales atenienses, en el juicio en el que se le acusó de corromper a la juventud y no creer en los dioses de la polis. Aristotle was the first philosopher to write ethical treatises. His best-known work in this field, The Nicomachean Ethics, consists of 10 books addressing the question of how the individual should best live. For Aristotle, ethics seeks to determine what makes a virtuous character possible, which is essential for a state of well-being. He describes a sequence of necessary steps to achieve this, such as righteous actions that promote the development of the right habits. He examines the moral virtues and their corresponding vices, like courage versus fear.

Meno is a Socratic dialogue written by Plato. In it, the two characters, Meno and Socrates, discuss "arete", or virtue. This dialogue is also famous for introducing "Meno's Paradox".

Von Heraklits Werk sind keine Originaltexte überliefert. Zur Verfügung stehen allein Bruchstücke. Problematisch ist, dass diese Bruchstücke aus den Werken diverser anderer antiker Autoren entnommen sind. Häufig sind es indirekte Zitate des Typs "Heraklit sagt,...". Nur selten finden sich direkte Zitate. Problematisch ist zudem, dass in der Fachliteratur bis heute umstritten ist, welche Fragmente authentisch sind. Die Authentizität von 1 bis 3 Dutzend Fragmenten ist umstritten.

The Phaedrus by Plato, is a dialogue between Plato's protagonist, Socrates, and Phaedrus, an interlocutor in several dialogues. It was probably written around 370 BC, at about the same time as Plato's Republic and Symposium. Ostensibly about love, the discussion in the dialogue focuses on the art of rhetoric and how it ought to be practiced.
