يعد مبحث الأخلاق أحد المباحث الفلسفية الأساسية، فالحياة الأخلاقية تستمد مرجعيتها من الأسس الفلسفية التي تستند إليها وتبررها وتفسرها، وفي هذا الكتاب اختار أحمد أمين أن يركز على دراسة هذا المبحث، ولكن بشكل تربوي، بحيث يبين لنا أهميته العملية قبل الفلسفية، وبذلك فهو لا ينظر إلى الأخلاق كمقولة نظرية تتداولها ألسنة الفلاسفة وتحلق بها في برج عاجي بحيث تظل حبيسة جدران الكتب، وإنما ينظر إليها كممارسة اجتماعية حية تتحقق في واقعنا المعيش، ونتلمس أثرها بشكل مباشر في كافة معاملاتنا الحياتية؛ لذلك فهو يركز بشكل أساسي على مفاهيم أخلاقية فاعلة مثل: الضمير، والعدل، والصدق، والطاعة، والتعاون

من الممكن لكل انسان ان يحقق الكمال المجازي لكن كما هو معلوم قليل جدا من يحققه، والسر في ذلك قوة الاختبار الدنيوي مقابل الضعف الانساني، وأقل شئ يمكن يحققه الانسان مهما كان ضعيف النفس، ولا يريد ان يتخلي عن ضعف نفسه، ألا يظهر فساده بين الناس وأن يستحي من الله ويتوب إليه في كل مرة يقوم بالمعصية ولو فعلها الف مره في اليوم، هذا اقل مايمكن ان يحققه الإنسان مهما كان ضعيف النفس، لأن ذلك أقل الاحترام لإنسانيته
