يعرض الكتاب سردًا زمنيًّا للعصور الذهبية للحضارة الإسلامية وذلك بدءًا من سنة 570 ميلاديًّا، أي مع ميلاد النبي محمد ﷺ، مع بيان صدى ذلك في العصر الحاضر. كتاب تاريخ ضائع يرد حقًّا وينسب فضلًا لرواد أوائل، لن يوفيهم إلا فيض من العرفان والتقدير بذلك الحق وهذا الفضل.

ينتقِلُ القارئُ في هذه الرِوايةِ التاريخيةِ إلى عصرٍ بائد، تختلفُ فيه العاداتُ والتقاليدُ وأسبابُ الحروب؛ حيث يَسردُ المؤلف، في إطارٍ رِوائي، قصةَ أحدِ فرسانِ قبيلةِ «تغلب» العربية، وأحدِ أهمِّ أبطالِ العصرِ الجاهِلي، وهو «عُديِّ بنِ ربيعة»، المُلقَّبِ ﺑ «المُهلهِل» أو «الزِّير».
