The conflict between cattlemen and small homesteaders erupted when cattle companies started to persecute supposed cattle-rustlers in Wyoming. The cattlemen hired armed gunmen to invade Johnson County, whereupon the homesteaders and smaller ranchers formed a posse of 200 men to oppose them.
