Hölderlin war niemals verrückt. In der Konsequenz des Leben-und-besingen-Müssens einer eigentlichen Lebensbejahung, der Annahme des Leides und des Glaubens an die göttliche und liebende Grundstimmung der menschlichen Seele, musste Hölderlin von seinen Mitmenschen, insbesondere von seiner Mutter, für verrückt erklärt werden. Was Rilke mit anderen "offenen Quellen" dieser Geistesströmung, wie Nietzsche, Heine, Kierkegaard und Hölderlin gemeinsam hat, ist das Vertrauen in den Menschen, ohne das der Mut zur Redlichkeit, zu einem unverstellten Glauben niemals möglich wäre.
