Český rytíř Martin ze Stvolna se na útěku z avignonského vězení octne v potulné herecké tlupě. I zde je mu však v patách inkvizice, v čele se zarputilým Kondrádem z Wormsu, který ho sleduje až do sousední Itálie. Nakonec se Martinovi ze Stvolna přes nejrůznější peripetie podaří doputovat zpátky do Čech. Ještě než se stačí dostat na Pražský hrad, zaplete se do hospodské potyčky a rázem mu hrozí pronásledování nejen mocí církevní, ale i světskou. Nakonec se však přece dostává zpátky do služeb krále Karla IV., který na jeho někdejší zásluhy nezapomněl.

Doprovází ho jeho žena Johanka, která však po několikaletém věznění v klášteře zchřadla a její duševní rovnováha zůstává otřesena. Poselstvo putuje přes Horní Uhry až do Transylvánie, kde se však Martin s Johankou proti své vůli ocitají na útěku před spravedlostí. Zdánlivý klid naleznou ve Valašsku nedaleko hranic s Osmanskou říší.

This ingenious novel is presented as a chronicle of an island from medieval to modern times. The island is not on the map, but it is real beyond doubt. It cannot be found in history books, yet the events are painfully recognizable. The monastic chroniclers dutifully narrate events they witness. The entries mostly seem objective, but at least one monk simultaneously drafts and hides a "true" history, to be discovered centuries later. And why has someone snipped out a key prophesy about the island's fate?
