Riflessione filosofica ed empito poetico fanno sì che Leopardi, al pari di Schopenhauer e più tardi di Kafka, possa essere visto come un esistenzialista o almeno un precursore dell'EsistenzialismoI temi sono quelli cari al poeta: il rapporto dell'uomo con la storia, con i suoi simili e in particolare con la Natura, di cui Leopardi matura una personale visione filosofica.

Stupisce che questi quattro racconti di Scerbanenco non siano stati notati e ripubblicati prima d'ora, per la verità che portano, nonché la loro importanza di testimonianza su come fu vissuto un periodo storico. Forse perché furono pubblicati nell'unica edizione nel 1946, tempi difficili e fragili di passaggio. Forse perché la successiva fama di inventore della "Milano calibro nove" mise in ombra l'altra, importante, produzione dello scrittore. Sono racconti di guerra, ambientati negli anni feroci.
