When Ellen and her two best friends travel to Tulsa for Sue's daughter's wedding, they get the crazy idea of flipping another historical home--only this time, it's an abandoned warehouse. In questo brevissimo racconto, col ritmo estremamente incalzante di un dialogo diretto, Daniel Defoe mette in luce - non senza ironia - le contraddizioni alla base di simili resoconti, anticipando di ben due secoli e mezzo la moderna "psicologia dell’insolito".

Daniel Defoe, con grande fiuto giornalistico, propone a chi legge un aneddoto inquietante - rimasto inspiegabile - che tratta con la sapiente originalità di un vero scrittore. Da sempre curioso verso l'occulto, l'autore propone, attraverso i suoi articoli, una serie di rocambolesche vicende che hanno per protagonisti degli autentici truffatori, volti a sfruttare l'autosuggestione a proprio vantaggio.

Questo breve racconto, pubblicato originariamente in "The History And Reality Of Apparitions" (1727), trasmette la memoria di un fatto inquietante, avvenuto ai tempi della Prima Rivoluzione Inglese (1642-1651). Protagonista della vicenda sarebbe stato il celebre bandito James Hind, artefice di molte rapine nello Huntingdonshire. Nel tentativo di rapinare quello che all’apparenza sembrerebbe un mite allevatore di campagna, Hind si ritrova infatti di fronte ad una figura infernale, che sembrerebbe preannunciargli la sua imminente morte.

"Resoconto dell’apparizione della signora Veal", originariamente pubblicato come pamphlet anonimo nel 1706, è tradizionalmente attribuito a Daniel Defoe, che all'epoca era impegnato nella stesura di vari articoli, spesso a tema spiritista. La storia narrata - secondo alcuni ispirata ad un evento vissuto dallo stesso Defoe - prende le mosse dall'incontro fra due amiche di lunga data, la signora Bargrave e la signora Veal.

Nel racconto "Il sacerdote e l’atto smarrito" - incluso in "The History and Reality of Apparitions" (1727) - Daniel Defoe riporta una vicenda narratagli dal Reverendo John Scott (1639-1695), da lui considerato una fonte attendibile. Un medico, contattato dal fantasma di un gentiluomo preoccupato per il nipote, si trova suo malgrado ad assistere quest'ultimo nel ritrovamento di un fondamentale atto di proprietà.
