Edward Malone, a young reporter for the Daily Gazette, asks his editor for a dangerous assignment to impress the woman he loves, Gladys, who wishes for a great man capable of brave deeds and actions. His task is to approach the notorious Professor Challenger, who dislikes the popular press intensely and physically assaults intrusive journalists. The subject is to be his recent South American expedition which, surrounded by controversy, guarantees a hostile reaction.

Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is presented as an autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer)—a castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical desert island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers, before ultimately being rescued. The story has been thought to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island called "Más a Tierra", now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966.

Pollyanna is a kind novel advocating an optimistic outlook, which is summarized in a famous quote 'When you look for the bad in mankind expecting to find it, you surely will'. Pollyanna, a young orphan, is living with her stern aunt, who is taking care of her out of 'sense of duty'. Under any circumstances Pollyanna prefers to see only their best side, taking joy in simplest things, she affects everyone around her. Hence a popular term 'Pollyannaism', or the Pollyanna Principle, a subconscious bias towards the positive.

This is a story of a valiant man who became a sort of American version of Robin Hood. His efforts were a courageous attempt to restore justice in early 19th-century Mexican California, where a corrupt governor was viciously exploiting the poor and downtrodden. It was a period when there were large haciendas and resident caballeros confronted by the harsh oppression. This brought forth a fictional effort featuring the persona of a masked laughing outlaw calling himself Zorro.

So manchem Karl-May-Leser wird die Geschichte vertraut vorkommen und doch wieder nicht. May arbeitete seinen ersten großen Wildwest-Roman (noch vor dem "Schatz im Silbersee" geschrieben) mit deutlichen Veränderungen in den zweiten Teil seines "Winnetou" ein. The Mark of Zorro was originally entitled The Curse of Capistrano. It was the first work to feature the California character Diego Vega, the masked hero also called Zorro. Zorro is the Spanish word for fox. The story was adapted into the silent film The Mark of Zorro in 1920. A new version of The Mark of Zorro was produced in 1940 starring Tyrone Power as Don Diego Vega.

One story has stated that the author, H. Rider Haggard, wrote the book on a bet and that it took him only six weeks to do it.
