Es herrscht ein verbitterter Krieg zwischen den verfeindeten Planeten Zolaris und Vulkania. Die beiden Weltraumforscher Professor Max Browny und Dr. Lydia Parker sind gerade dabei, Symbolox, der aus unvergänglicher Ur-Materie besteht und den Zolariern gut gesinnt ist, zu besuchen und zu erforschen, als die Meldung hereinkommt, dass der böse Black Devil von Vulkania einen Flugkörper abgeschossen hat, der genau in ihre Richtung zielt. Symbolox rät den beiden Forschern schnellstmöglich das Feld zu räumen.

Symbolox, ein aus unvergänglicher Ur-Materie bestehendes Roboter-Wesen hat schon unzählige Lebensformen kommen und gehen sehen. Bis auf die Fragen wann das Universum entstanden ist und bis wohin es reicht, weiß er alles. Er hat auch den Zolariern, die ein friedliches Volk sind, geholfen, als ihr Planet von dem bösen Black Devil von Vulkania beinahe völlig zerstört worden wäre. Mit einer einzigartigen List gelang es ihm, Zolaris und Vulkania zu vertauschen, sodass Black Devil tatsächlich seinen eigenen Planeten angegriffen hat und die gesamte Oberfläche vernichtet hat.

Mit seinen futuristischen Werken war der polnische Schriftsteller Stanisław Lem seiner Zeit voraus. Bereits 1964 beschrieb er mögliche Formen virtueller Realität.
