The Roman historian Tacitus was a successful politician who eventually became governor of the province of Asia. He is thought to have died around AD 120 and benefitted from the patronage of the Flavian emperors. The Histories, of which only just over four out of 14 books survive, covers the years following the assassination of the Emperor Nero: Rome was plunged into further civil war with the Year of the Four Emperors (AD 69), which culminated in the accession of Vespasian, the first of the Flavians.

When the Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity in 368 AD, he changed the course of European history in ways that continue to have repercussions to the present day. Adopting those aspects of the religion that suited his purposes, he turned Rome on a course from the relatively open, tolerant, and pluralistic civilization of the Hellenistic world, towards a culture that was based on the rule of fixed authority, whether that of the Bible, or the writings of Ptolemy in astronomy and of Galen and Hippocrates in medicine.

Unter dem Titel "Römische Geschichte" veröffentlichte der deutsche Historiker Theodor Mommsen von 1854 bis 1885 eine mehrbändige Darstellung der Geschichte des Römischen Reichs. Theodor Mommsen legte mit seinem monumentalen Werk den Grundstein der modernen Forschung und schuf eine umfassende Geschichte der römischen Republik, die bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten große, auch internationale Resonanz fand und bis heute ein Standardwerk geblieben ist. 1902 erhielt Mommsen für dieses Werk als erster Deutscher den Literatur-Nobelpreis.
